Frequently Asked Questions

What is yoga?

The word “yoga” derives from the Sanskrit word yug which means, “to yoke”, “union”, or “to come together”, so the practice of yoga means the practice of unifying the mind, body and spirit. Practicing yoga asana, or yoga postures, is an excellent way to create balance and strength in the body, while simultaneously calming the mind and spirit.

But I am not flexible. Don’t you need to be flexible to do yoga?

The practice of asana will help create flexibility and strength in the physical body. So, no, flexibility is not a prerequisite for practicing yoga!

What is “vinyasa yoga”?

There are many styles of yoga today! The word “vinyasa” means, “to place in a certain way”. Vinyasa yoga is a flow style yoga which stresses linking the postures with the flow of the breath. The pace of the class can range from gentle to vigorous, depending on the style of the teacher and the level of the students.

How often should I practice yoga?

This is personal choice. Our lives have become so busy that yoga often gets pushed in the “I do not have the time” pile! You can practice yoga whenever you like, whether that is once or five times a week! However, the body responds tremendously to a consistent physical yoga practice, so creating a habit of practicing yoga is key.

I am a beginner. How should I begin?

Many studios and teacher offer “Beginner Series”, which is a wonderful way to get your yoga toes wet. I offer Beginner Series a few times a year, so check Upcoming Events for any future workshops and series!
